Paul McCartney – some background information

Born and bred in the United Kingdom on June 18, 1942, Sir James Paul McCartney is one of the legendary members of the great band The Beatles. He is one of the greatest English artists in the music industry, along with his co-members John Lennon,  Ringo Starr and George Harrison. He and his band were one of the most popular and sought-after artists around the globe in the 20th century.

Though Paul McCartney became popular while he was with The Beatles, he began performing as a solo artist after the band’s break-up. Later on, he formed Wings together with Linda, his first wife, and Denny Laine.

Paul McCartney also grabbed the record of Guinness World Records as the “Most Successful Composer and Recording Artist of All Time”, with 60 gold discs and over 100 million albums and 100 million singles sold. The Beatles’ hit song “Yesterday”, which Paul wrote and sang, has been covered by more than 2200 artists, making him the “Most Successful songwriter” in the UK chart history. His other band Wings released another top list song called Mull of Kintyre, which was his composition too.

As of early 2013, Paul McCartney has sold more than 15.5 million RIAA-certified units in the United States. He has written or co-written 32 songs that hit the Billboard Hot 100. Paul has also been involved in projects that promote international charities related with animal rights, vegetarianism and music education.  His interests have also extended to composing orchestral music such as Standing Stone and the Liverpool Oratorio.
